The Hunter National Training Scheme (HUNTS)

The HUNTS Course was established in 1987, a joint venture between the NZ Deerstalkers’ Association and the NZ Mountain Safety Council.

The HUNTS Course is aimed at new comers to the sport of hunting or older shooters, who are keen to improve their bushcraft and hunting skills. Trainees must be at least 16 years old preferably have a current firearms licence, their own centre fire rifle, suitable clothing and equipment as well as a reasonable level of fitness. Membership of NZDA is also mandatory to take advantage of their public liability insurance and facilities. The North Canterbury Branch offers courses from time to time. Inquiries are welcome.

The course is designed to increase competence and confidence in basic bushcraft and hunting skills, to enable participants to successfully complete 1 to 2 day hunting trip, into areas below the timber line.

These skills include, but are not limited to:

• Behaving in an ethical and environmentally friendly manner.
• Knowing how to plan a trip and reduce potential risks.
• Knowing the correct equipment and food to carry.
• Applying sound bushcraft, navigation and river crossing methods.
• Understanding rifle safety, ballistics and marksmanship.
• Identifying and understanding the behaviour of game animals.
• Apply reliable hunting and shooting techniques.
• Learning how to skin and butcher a deer and trophy preparation.
• Learning survival techniques and basic first aid.

The following are the confirmed dates of the 2017 HUNTS course: 

Tuesday 19 Sept – Clubrooms 6.30pm:

Enrolment, introduction to Hunting ethics and NZDA Hunting Guidelines, handouts of DVD, notebook etc

Module 1 Ethical and Environmental Responsibilities

Module 2 Equipment and food

Saturday/Sunday 23/24 Sept – Clubrooms 9am and Payton Lodge

Module 3 Navigation

Travel to Payton Lodge to setup camp for overnight stay

Practical navigation, route selection, map and compass, GPS, ELB, trip planning, intentions form

Module 8 Survival Skills - Backcountry First Aid Management

Tuesday 26 Sept – Clubrooms 6.30pm to 9.30pm

Modules 5-7 Game animal species, biology, habitat, seasonal variation,

Hunting Techniques

Trophies.

Saturday 30 Sept - 9am Clubrooms and Environs

Module 7 Meat and Skins - Game butchery

Module 3 Bush craft / River crossing


Tuesday 3 Oct – Clubrooms 6.30pm to 9.30pm:

Module 4 Firearm selection, safety and markmanship


Saturday 7 Oct – Rifle Range beside Clubrooms 9am to 4pm:

Range shoot, practice field positions, check and zero trainee rifles for hunting weekend.


Tuesday 10th Oct – Clubrooms 6.30pm to 9.30pm:

Module 9 Trip planning and risk management

Tahr and Chamois hunting

Friday 13 - Sunday 15th Oct – Ben McLeod station:

Modules: 6, 9, 7 3

Hunting weekend, camping out, final debrief and course evaluation by trainees.

Prerequisite: Current membership of NZ Deerstalkers Assn.

Course fee: $150.

Age restriction – The HUNTS course is aimed at newcomers to the sport of hunting or older shooters who are keen to improve their bush craft and hunting skills.

Trainees must be at least 16 years old and preferably have a current firearms licence, their own centre-fire rifle, suitable clothing and equipment as well as a reasonable level of fitness.

Fourteen and fifteen year old persons may be allowed on the course at the discretion of the HUNTS co-ordinator. Some conditions will apply.
